About this organisation

Description of charity

Human Nature is dedicated to providing innovative, nature-based mental health support to young people aged 14- 18 in the Far North Coast who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access it. By removing key barriers like cost, transport & the stigma around seeking help, we're able to build therapeutic relationships with some of the most vulnerable & disadvantaged young people in our region. We do this by meeting young people where they are most comfortable & tailoring support to their individual needs.

Summary of activities

Human Nature exits to expertly support and empower young people to heal and thrive through deeper connection with themselves, with their peers, with nature and their community. We offer a wide range of innovative nature-based programs that help young people access person-centred and trauma informed mental health support. 120 young people participated in our programs in the past year.

Mission or vision of the charity

Our mission is to empower young people to navigate life’s challenges – transforming trauma and disadvantage into healing and growth. We do it by listening to young people, meeting them where they are and walking alongside them on their mental health journey for as long as they need us.

Outcomes measurement detail

Approach to measuring outcomes

We measure our impact using clinical tools including MyMindStar, which is designed for use in early intervention youth mental health services like ours. Using this tool, we can track our participants’ progress in a range of areas directly related to the impact we strive for. We also use Feedback Informed Therapy - an evidence-based practice where practitioners gather real-time input from clients using structured measures to identify what is/isn’t working & then make adjustments.

Approach to collecting feedback from the people it serves

We regularly consult with young people about our programs via our Youth Leadership Council and post activity surveys.

What is this?

This graph shows how much revenue (money in) and expenses (money out) the charity has had each year over the last few years. Charities have many sources of revenue, such as donations, government grants, and services they sell to the public. Similarly, expenses are everything that allows the charity to run, from paying staff to rent.

What should I be looking for?

First off, this graph gives a general indication of how big the charity is - charities range in size from tiny (budgets of less than $100,000) to enormous (budgets more than $100 million). You're also looking for variability - if the charity's revenue and expenses are jumping up and down from year to year, make sure there's a good reason for it.

Unlike companies, charities and not-for-profits aren't on a mission to make money. However, if they spend more than they receive, eventually they will go into too much debt and run into trouble. As a very general rule, you want revenue to be slightly above expenses. If expenses is reliably above revenue, the charity is losing money. If revenue is much larger than expenses, it means the charity might not be using its resources effectively. It isn't always that simple, however, and there's a lot of reasons a charity might not follow this pattern. They might be saving up for a big purchase or campaign, or they might have made a big one-off payment. If you're worried, always look at the annual and financial reports to understand why the charity is making the decisions it is.
